OOTD: Ann Taylor Loft Wool Pencil Skirt w/Ribbon Waistband

Today I found myself in a small predicament and was hoping to get some styling input from you guys. Have you ever bought a piece of clothing that you knew wasn't particularly flattering on you, but your husband loved?  I don't think I ever have before!  Mr. PEMS is not your average male in that he loves to shop, styles his own closet and even keeps his own lookbook..............so, when he complimented the Wool Pencil Skirt w/Ribbon Waistband that I wore today I was slightly taken aback.  Don't get me wrong, it doesn't look hideous or anything, it's just that I definitely have more flattering wool pencil skirts hanging in my closet right now....in the same shade of gray no less!
I bought this skirt particularly because of the ribbon waistband.  I thought it was a really great detail and none of my other skirts had it....................So maybe I'm just being overly picky, but I really felt like the waist was too loose and the hips a tad tight.

I'm not sure that the pictures I took really shows the gaping material at the waist but it kept riding up and I was tugging it down all day.

But the backside is definitely snug.  Gotta love an exposed zipper for sure!  I'm thinking a tad improper for the office, but what do you guys think?  Btw, this skirt was also reviewed by Jean at Extra Petite.  Check out her post here.  We're both in the 00p for any sizing reference.  Please let me know if anyone else reviewed this skirt and I'll add in their link.  *Also reviewed by Michelle at Mini Maestra here.

  1. I actually really like this skirt on you, I think it looks best on someone with a small waist and a comparatively fuller hip. I didn't even recognize that it was the same one that Jean modeled. I can see why your hubby like it. :) However, if it's uncomfortable to wear because the waist is loose, maybe get it taken in? But I don't really know how the ribbons can affect the difficult level of the alteration.

  2. haha i think your husband liked it because its form fitting in the back! my bf likes anything tight....*shaking my head*

i look like the look of the skirt. it looks expensive and the ribbon detail is really unique.

i think loose waist on skirts are uber annoying. I have a skirt from bebe and the waist is so loose. the skirt will rotate to the point where the back is in the front and i have to reposition it every 10 mins.

  3. I purchased that same for less than $30, thinking it was a very good price, and so wanted to make it work, but ended up returning it. I'm hopeful that Loft and Ann Taylor will bring out some much nicer skirts for the upcoming holidays :).

  4. I absolutely love that skirt on you. I know it was a bit big on the waist but still look great. I love how you paired them with brown boots. Where did you get your boots from? I love them. They look so chic!

  5. I thought the same thing when I tried it on. I keep giving ann taylor / AT loft second chances but in reality their petite sizing is awful. Anyhow, I do the love skirt, it looks good on you.

  6. I know exactly what you are going through. My first post featured this skirt. However, I have yet to wear this for work because of the tight fitting backside. I am more than likely returning it this weekend.

My motto for work clothes is...if I am not sure whether or not something is appropriate, I should not be wearing it.

But I do think it looks amazing on you...especially with those boots!

  7. Elle, That is a good idea about having the waist taken down on the skirt, the only thing is that I got if for under $30.00 and I really wanted to keep the savings, you know?

Ping, Yes, it is annoying having to adjust your skirt all day.....and then, what if you don't notice that it's moved and you look down half way through the day and it's totally lopsided! Completely agree!

Sydney, Sounds like we got about the same deal...and you returned yours huh? I'm thinking I may have to do the same.

Petite Little Girl, These boots are sooo comfortable. I wore them in the last challenge that Kelly hosted. The brand is Bandolino and I bought them at Macy's last fall season. I highly recommend!

Khatu, Absolutely agree, there's just something off about their petite sizing...especially on their skirts.

Michelle, Yea! You included a link to your review for this skirt. I'm going to add it in if you don't care. I like your motto, I think I'll adopt it too ;)

  8. My hubby also seem to like some really odd items too... he'll be meh about things I love, but will ooh and ahh over others that I'm not particularly excited about lol... go figure. I will keep things he likes even if I don't love them, as long as I like them enough and they're wearable.

I think the skirt looks really good on you and I can't really tell that the waist is big... definitely not unflattering at all!

  9. Oh too bad about the waist. Otherwise, I think skirt looks absolutely great on you. You look stunning in this outfit, I love it.

  10. I think this skirt looks great on you! The color is beautiful and I bet your hubs likes it because it makes your caboose look great :) Too bad it's not very comfortable! The ribbon is a pretty detail.

  11. Liane, Men are funny sometimes I guess.....and you keep things he likes, that's really sweet!

Claud, Thank you. Yes, it is too bad about the waist, but it sounds like all of the other girls had the same problem with this skirt.

Tinylin T, So sweet.........and you're right, the ribbon is a pretty detail. I think you summed it up perfectly for me, it's not very comfortable, thank you!

  12. I can't really tell there's gaping besides the first pic. It does look good on you, but if you're constantly tugging at it and not liking the waist/hips fit, I think it should be returned. Stuff like that seem small, but it'd bug me over time!

  13. from the pics, you look great Callandra. but you're the one wearing it and having to deal w/the twists and turns of the skirt due to a large waist, so if you dont 100% love it and not willing to alter it, I'd return it. Something else that's better will come along.

is it just me? i dont have issues w/loft's skirts?!!

  14. I'm a sucker too when the mister compliments something out of the blue...it's too shocking and sways my good judgment. Since I've tried on thsi skirt too, I know exactly what you mean. It fit me almost at the hips, but the ribbon waist was funky and sticks straight up and down instead of tapers in to fit a smaller waist. I thought it was just me, but seeing these photos is like deja vu!

I also agree the tush is kind of snug...it looks fab on you in my opinion, but I wouldn't be comfortable wearing that to work. I say...if you still have the tags, return it? I like your J.Crew one in this color much better on you!

  15. Mmmm. Your first picture shows that the waist is way too big on you. but the second and third pictures look fine. It does fit a bit too tight on you, and the material looks way too form fitting. Great for your hubby, not so great for your comfort level at work. :) I say if you don't LOVE it return. This rule applies to all my purchases.

  16. The ribbon is a great "lady" detail that I love.. and it does look good on you despite the tight fit and big waist. But, I would imagine you would look good in most anything and must agree with the comments that have suggested the return. You said somthing about having several skirts that are all very much alike ... how about having the ribbon detail added to one of them? I'm thinking about adding details to some of my items from last year that would make them look a little bit more "this year". Not only will it save me money (always a plus) but it will keep my closet from becoming ridiculuously full again : )

  17. Hi! I'm a new reader. Great blog!

The skirt looks really good on you! I've bought something I haven't loved because I really wanted that trend/style and it was the best I could find. I always regret it because if it doesn't fit right, I won't end up wearing it!

  19. Cee, I'm like you, I was fine starting out but by the end of the day I was so tired of tugging!

Aubrey, Well that very cool! I really wish their skirt fits were good for me as well. You're very lucky!

Jean, I have to admit that I love it when he compliments my outfits spontaneously, it does make it a bit harder to return the skirt for sure.

Vicky, Form-fitting is not the look I want for work, thank you for your input!

Bella, What a great idea! I'm definitely going to try it out....(now I just have to decide which skirt ;)

Pearls and Green Tea, Thank you for reading and leaving a comment! I've done that in the past too and the item just sits in my closet. A waste of money really, thank you.

Tara, Thanks for checking out my blog! Kind of new at this, but having a lot of fun.
